North Okanagan Resource/Habitat Atlas (NORHA)

How to use the Atlas

The North Okanagan Resource/Habitat Atlas provides information about about natural and cultural attributes and resources of the North Okanagan region. The atlas is located on an internet site called the Community Mapping Network. The Community Mapping Network was created to share natural resource information and mapping amongst communities in British Columbia and across Canada.

The atlas uses Geographic Information Systems (GIS) data to create maps based on the requests of the user.

Users can:

  • Turn layers on or off
  • Zoom in and out
  • Print maps
  • Look at information about the data

Quick Start Guide

  1. The atlas has been upgraded to the newest version of Mapguide therefore no plug-in is required anymore to view the atlas. Click the link to North Okanagan Resource/Habitat Atlas (opens the mapping application in another window).

  2. The most common functions are:
    1. Turn layers on or off.
Use the check boxes on the left side panel to turn themes on or off. The layers are organized into groups - you will need to check the box beside the group in order to view the themes inside it. Some themes are "scale dependant". This means that they will only be available when you are zoomed in to the right scale.

    2. Zoom in or out.
To zoom in, select the zoom in tool Zoom In Tool . Position the mouse (now showing a magnifying glass) over the map and either click to zoom in automatically, or drag a square to zoom in to a specified area.
To zoom out, choose the zoom out tool Zoom Out Tool, position the cursor over the map and click. More options are available by right clicking the cursor over the map.

    3. Move within the map.
Select the pan tool Pan Tool to move within the map. Position the cursor over the map, click and hold the mouse button down while moving the mouse. The map will refresh in the new location.

  3. View metadata. Click on the metadata button in the top righthand corner. This will open a new window with general info about each layer. Click on the "View Metadata" link to see more detailed information.
